Dr. Dan Elliott
Dr. Dan Elliott, professor of biology at Central Methodist College, was presented with the Exemplary Teacher Award Sunday during CMC's annual Honors Convocation.

The award is given by the United Methodist General Board of Higher Education and Ministry. Elliott was nominated for the award by faculty members here and recommended by the Faculty Personnel Committee. Criteria for selection as Exemplary Teacher include 'excellence in teaching, civility and concern for students and colleagues, commitment to values-centered education and service to the institution, community or church.'

A faculty member since 1974, Elliott is also curator of the college's Stephens Museum, which houses a natural history collection as well as cultural artifacts, including items from the early history of Methodism.

Elliott teaches biology, historical geology and botany. Each year, he also conducts field studies programs and expeditions involving archeology and geology. This summer, he will conduct an excavation near Arrow Rock (Saline County) at an historical site known as George Sibley's Fort, which dates to the early 19th century. Previously he has conducted excavations north of Arrow Rock at locations that were post-Civil War settlements established by former slaves. His most significant find was in 1997 during an excavation along the Missouri River, when he located a starfish fossil that has been scientifically dated to 350-million years ago.

Elliott has been honored in numerous North American academic and professional journals, including 'Who's Who in American Education' and 'Who's Who in American Men and Women in Science,' and in international academic and professional journals such as 'International Academic of the year for 2004,' 'Man of the Year 2004' and 'International Educator of the Year 2004.' He received the Governor's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1992 and has been honored several times with the ODK (Omicron Delta Kappa) Gold Chalk and ODK Chester Hanson Award for Teaching. Omicron Delta Kappa is a national honorary leadership organization in higher education.

Elliott also serves as faculty advisor to the CMC Board of Curators and to the Heart of America Athletic Conference.

He earned his bachelor's degree at William Jewell College, master's degree at Central Missouri State University and his doctorate at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He and his wife, Maggie, live in Fayette. They have three grown children.
