Falcon bats heat up late in win over Knox County

It took a few innings for the Fayette bats to warm up, and then they caught fire.

The Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning and then added six runs over the next two to run away with a 7-3 win over Knox County.

Fayette had just two hits over the first three innings, but got three in a row from Megan Lewis, Breanna Estes and Bella Asbury to load the bases with one out for Hannah Quint.

Quint saw a few pitches before getting one that she could drive into the outfield.

“There were some low, some high, and then she threw me one down the middle,” Quint said.

“And I was like, my team needs me, so it’s time to hit.”

Quint’s fly ball to right field dropped on the grass to give Fayette a one-run lead in the fourth. Quint finished 3-3 for the day, and drove in three runs.

The Falcons would add four more runs in the fifth inning.

Madi Lawson came through with a bases-loaded single to score a run and Quint hit a triple that drove in two more.

“We scored all those runs with two outs,” coach Mike James pointed out after the game.

“We had nobody on and manufactured all that with two outs and got two huge 2-out hits.”

Lewis and Estes both singled with two outs and Asbury drew a walk to load the bases for Lawson.

“That was nice to see that we didn’t give in with two. Sometimes with two outs and nobody on, it’s easy to move along and try again next inning.”

Addison Newell drove in a run with a single in the sixth and Megan Lewis drove in a run with a double, which gave her a 4-4 day at the plate.

“She’s been hitting the ball real well and that’s why I moved her to the three spot,” James said about Lewis.

“The way we’ve kind of ordered it now, we’re definitely scoring more runs. I’m pretty happy with the way we’re playing. We’re getting production and pretty good defensive play out of a lot of different people.”

Estes went 3-4 at the plate and scored a run. Ball allowed five this and two walks. The Falcons committed two errors in the seventh inning and all three Knox County runs were unearned.

“I like the way our team is progressing over the last five or six games, we’re hitting the ball a lot better with people on base and we’re starting to come through in the clutch,” James said.

“We still haven’t put together a perfect defensive game. I thought tonight was going to be it, it was pretty solid until that last inning.

“Jordyn pitched great and if we continue to do that we’ll be fine.”
