The Fayette girls have a tough go of things in last week’s Harrisburg Tournament. They fell hard 85-35 at the hands of Class 4 Hallsville in round one on Tuesday and 60-20 against fourth-seeded Fulton on Thursday. The tough stretch culminated with a 32-25 loss on Friday to a sizeable Tolton Catholic team.
“They’re big. They’re sized bugged us for sure,” said Fayette coach Brian Spielbauer.
Fayette couldn’t find a way past Tolton center Maggie McGuire. The 5-foot, 11-inch senior patrolled the paint and swatted down almost every inside shot, forcing Fayette to score from the perimeter.
Fifteen of Fayette’s 25 points came from 3-point distance. Senior Abby Nation scored twice from long distance. Sophomore Kenzie Felten made one 3-pointer. Both finished with six points to lead the Falcon scoring. Senior Kaylea Hoover scored five points and made three of four free-throw attempts. She was named to the All-Tournament team. Juniors Laci Fuhlage and Emma Chew each had three points.
“I thought we competed better tonight than the last two nights,” Spielbauer said. “We just have to keep getting better. We can use a game like this to get better.”
Tolton jumped out early with a nine-point run, but Fayette clawed back in the final minute on five straight points from Felten. The Falcons tied the game at 11-11 with under three minutes to play in the first half. But the Trailblazers finished up with six unanswered points in the final minute, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer from junior Sophie Angel to lead at halftime 17-11.
Fayette came within four points a couple of times in the third quarter as both teams scored just seven points each. But every time the Falcons would cut the lead Tolton seemed to have an answer. The Trailblazers outscored Fayette 8-7 in the final frame to hold on to the win.
Fayette junior Jordyn Ball struggled inside against Tolton’s height dominance. She finished with just two points before fouling out of the game. “You can make a pretty good move and not get open against girls that big,” Spielbauer said.
“To compete in our conference, we don’t have to beat teams like that. We’re going to get back and have some good games. I’m excited to move forward.”
