Falcons come together on senior night

Posted

Abbey Conrow is the engine that powers the Fayette girls basketball team.

She leads the Falcons in scoring, rebounds, assists, and steals. She takes 28 percent of the team’s shots and scores 39 percent of the points.

But she can’t win games alone.

On Tuesday night, Feb. 18, Conrow’s teammates stepped up. The Falcons came back from a 27-15 halftime deficit to beat Paris 51-45 on senior night.

Conrow led four Falcons in double figures with 15 points.

A Falcon other than Conrow had only reached double figures six times in the last 17 games.

Laci Fuhlage went 6-8 from the free-throw line to finish with 10. Jordyn Ball and Sydney Spielbauer each scored eight points during the second-half comeback to finish with 11.

“It meant a lot,” an emotional Conrow said after the senior night victory.

“They play for the team, but I feel like they also play for me too.

“We finally realized what kind of team we are and how we can play. To see them score, makes me so much more happy than anything. To see everybody contributing and playing as a team was outstanding tonight.”

Fuhlage drew fouls on back-to-back possessions in the fourth quarter and went 3-4 at the line to tie the game at 38-38.

On the next trip to the offensive end, Fayette missed a shot, but Kylea Hoover fought for the rebound and kicked the ball out to an open Spielbauer. The crowd erupted as her 3-pointer fell through the net.

Ball scored on the next trip to push the Falcon run to 16-4.

“It was really special to come back, especially against a team like that,” Ball said. “I was really proud of everybody because we all pulled together. We all scored and played like a team.”

The Falcons started the second half on an 8-0 run after scoring just one field goal in the second quarter.

“We came out with really flat energy,” Fayette coach Valerie Foland said.

“We talked at halftime and asked, ‘is this how we want to go out, is this it?’

“We had to have a will to win. And they came out ready to fight and turned it around.”

Conrow’s impact on Fayette goes way beyond her statistical contributions, which are impressive. She’s a supportive friend and a guide by example.

“I’m really going to miss her because she’s the leader,” Ball said

“When things are bad, you look up to her and she’ll be there to give you and answer. She’ll pick you up if something’s going wrong. She’s the leader on the floor and pretty much everywhere.”
