Falcons sharp in all phases during 5-1 win over Salisbury

Posted

After putting up five runs in the first two innings, Fayette relied on pitching and defense to earn a 5-1 win over defending Class 1 state champion Salisbury.

Just five days earlier, the first inning was a disaster for the Falcons in a loss to Marceline. On Tuesday, Fayette was ready from the first pitch – at the plate and in the field.

The Falcons loaded the bases in the first inning and scored two runs on a one-out single from Bella Asbury.

“Everyone had a really good attitude going in to it,” Asbury said about the first inning. “Everyone was pretty upbeat and hyped up and I think that was a really big key to the start.”

Abby Nation reached base on a bunt single in each of the first two innings, beating the throw on a close play at first base each time.

She said her goal was to just “get on and get over. The top getting on, that was key.”

The first two batters in the Fayette lineup, Nation and Addison Newell, both reached base with a hit in the first inning, and again in the second.

Breanna Estes drove in two runs with a double to left field in the second. Asbury came through again with a single to center for her third RBI of the day.

“Like any at bat, I was pretty nervous,” Asbury said.

“But I just walked up there. I told myself, you can do this, you’re a good hitter, just have a lot of confidence in yourself. That’s what gets me through every at bat.”

The Fayette seniors were 0-3 against Salisbury, and were outscored 36-1 in those three meetings.

Nation was 2-4 and scored two runs. Estes had a big two-RBI hit with two outs. Kylea Hoover had a hit and gloved a low ball with two runners on to end the fifth. Hoover also had the assist on the final out as Fayette beat Salisbury for the first time in at least 12 meetings.

“Anytime you can match up against a team of their caliber, their tradition, and beat them, you’ve got to be happy with that,” Fayette coach Mike James said.

“It seems like for the past five or six years, the senior class does something that the previous years didn’t do. So this year, they can lay claim to that. That’s credit to Salisbury with how well they’ve done over the years. It is really a big deal to beat them.”

Megan Lewis was 1-3 with a walk. Addison Powell scored two runs as a courtesy runner for Newell.

Fayette had just one error in the game. Jordyn Ball allowed one run on six hits and did not walk a batter. She struck out seven.

“I thought Jordyn went out there with good defense and just established that she was going to hit her spots and that we weren’t going to throw the ball around,” James said.

“I think we surprised them a bit with the five runs off the bat.

"Luckily, we were good enough all night that we didn’t need more. I kept thinking that we needed one or two more runs, but Jordyn was good the defense was good and we didn’t need any more.”
