Falcons win home tournament

The Falcon softball team scored 50 runs over three games to claim a championship in the Fayette Softball Tournament.

Senior Abby Nation was 3-4 with a triple during Fayette’s 11-3 win over Harrisburg in the title game.

“It’s amazing,” Nation said after the championship win. “That’s four years in a row for us, so it’s a really good feeling.”

The Falcons had ten hits in the championship game, and 27 for the day.

Nation said that it was all about confidence.

“We had to focus at the plate, really tell ourselves we could,” she explained. “We all know we can get on and get around.”

After Harrisburg took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, Fayette came back with a four-run second. The Falcons took the lead when two runs scored on Nation’s single. Megan Lewis tripled to put Fayette on top 4-1. Hannah Quint had a two-RBI double during Fayette’s five-run fourth inning.

Addison Newell was 2-4 with a double. Lewis and Bella Asbury went 2-4 at the plate as well.

Madi Lawson had two of Fayette’s four stolen bases. Five Falcons reached base on errors during the game.

“We put a lot of pressure on Harrisburg and got them to probably make some mistakes that they don’t normally make,” Fayette coach Mike James said. “That’s how we want to play, kind of helter-skelter, run all over the place and let the other team make mistakes. If we do that, we’re pretty hard to beat.”

Jordyn Ball allowed two earned runs on eight hits over seven innings. She struck out 11 and did not walk a batter.

Emma Fischer had an RBI hit in the first inning for Harrisburg and Baylie Combs drove in a run in the third inning to cut the Fayette lead to two and hit an RBI double in the seventh.

Fischer and Katie Starbuck each went 2-4 at the plate and Combs was 3-4.

Fayette defeated Slater 23-0 and Glasgow 16-1 to reach the championship game.
Breanna Estes was 5-6 with eight RBI in the two blowouts.

Newell had a hit and drove in two runs in the win over Slater. The Falcons had five hits and drew 16 walks. Preslee Sunderland earned the win for Fayette. She allowed one hit and no walks over the three innings and struck out seven.

Asbury was 2-2, walked twice, and scored three runs in the win over Glasgow. Kylea Hoover was 2-2 with a walk and Nation had two hits and scored three runs. Madi Lawson had a hit, a walk, and scored three times as well.

Fayette outscored its opponents 50-4 over the three tournament wins.

“I think we faced some young pitchers who are still learning how to spot strikes and things like that,” James said. “I thought we did a better job of being patient and not chasing and we put some swings on some balls.

“We got to get some girls in too today. We got some younger girls in and some girls that are going to help us next year. They’re getting a little taste of it now, which I think will help us down the line.”

The three tournament wins gave Fayette a record of 9-2 and a perfect 8-0 record at home.

“It feels good to keep winning this thing,” James said. “I think last year it was a springboard into a lot of wins and got us set up real well for district. Hopefully it does that again.”
