Father charged with involuntary manslaughter in death of teenage son

A Fayette man was charged with first-degree involuntary manslaughter, a Class C felony, in the shooting death of his 15-year-old son in February. Eddie Valencia, 51, was arrested Monday and is currently being held in the Howard County Jail. No bond amount had been set as this newspaper went to press Tuesday.

Valencia allegedly shot his son, Kevin Cash, in their home on the night of February 20. While ruled an accident, Fayette Chief of Police David Ford said that criteria were met to warrant the charge. A Child Fatality Review Board hearing was held on Friday, February 26, to examine the situation. The charge was filed by the Howard County prosecutor on Tuesday.

Since Cash’s death, there has been an outpouring of emotion throughout the community. A freshman at Fayette High School, he was an athlete and beloved teammate. The boys’ basketball team honored their fallen teammate and varsity statistician with an empty chair that held his No. 3 jersey, his basketball shoes, and a bag of popcorn. Players and fans all wore t-shirts bearing his name and number, along with special patches on their jerseys. On Friday, a candlelight vigil was attended by more than 200 people on the courthouse lawn in Fayette to mourn Cash’s passing along with other recent tragedies that have befallen members of the community.
