Fayette baseball falls at ‘home’ to Knox County

The Fayette Falcons came out on the short end of a one-hitter and a 19-0 score Monday against Knox County. The score, however, does not reflect anything near the amount of frustration this team, its coaches, and its fans have to be feeling at this point.

It is a much-discussed fact that Fayette High School and Central Methodist both play home games at Estes Field on the CMU campus. Central had doubleheaders scheduled for Saturday and Sunday against Benedictine. With the rain that came through Fayette on Friday and Saturday, both games on Saturday were rained out. With that happening and both Benedictine and CMU having an open date on Monday, the decision was made to move Saturday’s games to Monday.

Moving those games then caused a conflict due to Fayette being scheduled to play on Estes Monday evening. Fayette athletic director Mike James received a call Saturday evening informing him of the change. This, of course, set James into action. He contacted the athletic director of New Franklin High School to check the availability of their field as an alternate site. The field was available and arrangements were made. So for the second time this season, Fayette would be playing a home game in New Franklin.

The game started out favorably for the Falcons as Haden Kelly took the mound. Kelly got two quick outs before giving up a single to Knox County’s third hitter. Not phased, Kelly got the cleanup hitter to fly out to left to end the inning.

Offensively, Fayette could only manage a single by senior Chris Brown in the bottom of the first. He was left stranded when the third out was recorded.

Knox County broke through in the second with seven runs. It was not a matter of freebies being given up that caused problems for Fayette as only one walk and one hit by pitch were issued in the inning. Knox County was able to scratch out five singles and a double to push the six runs across.

Knox County then began a string of two more innings in which they scored five in the third and seven in the fourth. After Fayette was unable to draw within ten runs of Knox County the 10-run rule was applied and the game was called.

The loss moves Fayette’s season record to 2-7 while Knox County moved to 6-4.

Fayette’s Tuesday evening game at Schuyler County was called off prior to Monday’s game because of the threat of snow in the forecast. Fayette will play next at Harrisburg on Thursday at 5 p.m.
