Fayette boys begin win streak of their own

The Fayette boys played their second game in two nights Friday and defeated South Callaway 49-39 at home.

With the win, the Falcons raised their season record to 5-9 and created a two-game winning streak. “I’ve said all along, ‘these guys fight,’” said Fayette head coach Jon Bishop. “They certainly did tonight.”

The Falcons had a nine-point lead going into the half after outscoring the Bulldogs in both the first and second quarters.

South Callaway came back in the third and outscored the Falcons 11-5, leaving Fayette with a three-point lead to start the fourth.

“Our fourth quarter was about guts,” said Bishop. “We missed some shots and they made some shots, but we held on and made some free throws and forced them to take some long threes that didn’t fall.”

We pulled out the 49-39 win,” Bishop said. “We knew it would be a battle. We’ve got to give credit to (assistant) coach (Gerald) Spencer for coming up with the game plan tonight. It’s great to have good people around you, and it’s even better when they are great at coaching.”

Senior Dalton Collins paced the Falcons with 24 points on the night and also dished out five assists.

Classmate Theo Owings notched his sixth double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Another senior, Tyler Bartholomew, added six points and six rebounds to go along with classmate Chris Brown’s four points and four rebounds.

Junior Haden Kelly put up three points while pulling down seven rebounds. Junior Ben Wells rounded out the Falcon scoring with two points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Fayette opened play in the Harrisburg tourney Tuesday night against Centralia after The Advertiser went to press, and will go up against Hallsville at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.

There are only five boys teams available to play in the tournament.

The teams involved, Fayette, Centralia, Hallsville, Fulton, and Harrisburg, will each play two games with the boys games starting Tuesday evening and continuing on Thursday and Saturday afternoon.

The Falcons are 4-3 since coming back from Christmas break for a .571 winning percentage.
