Fayette buzzer-beater shocks Class 4 Hallsville

Posted

The Fayette Falcons pulled out the upset of the Harrisburg Tournament with a stunning 79-78 win over second-seeded Hallsville on Thursday in Hallsville.

Trailing by two with just seconds on the clock, senior Cody Hilgedick sank a 3-pointer to put fifth-seeded Fayette on top of the Class 4 Indians.

“I am so proud of going into an environment like we did tonight and playing so hard all night,” beamed Fayette coach Jon Bishop. Hallsville is a very solid Class 4 team that is very athletic and fast. They pushed us to the limit.”

Hallsville showed just how dominant it could be on Monday night with a 30-point throttling of tournament host and number-three seed Harrisburg. The Indians once again attacked the rim and played a vigorous man-to-man defense that gave them an 18-10 lead after one quarter. Fayette sprang back in the second frame and tied the game with about half a minute to go in the half.

Coach Bishop said his team had a couple of mental issues in the final moments of the second quarter that allowed Hallsville to enter halftime with a 37-29 lead.

The Falcons showed no letup in the third quarter, tying with Hallsville 19-19 to trail by eight entering the final period. Fayette pulled within one point in the closing seconds when Hilgedick scored the go-ahead three. “Obviously Cody hitting that shot at the end was huge. It’s great as a coach having so many options in the end like had to hit shots like that.”

But as exciting as that buzzer-beater was, it would not have been possible without stellar play from Dalton Collins who scored 20 of his team-high 31 points in the fourth quarter. The 6-foot, 2-inch junior sank two 3-pointers and made two clutch free throws with under a minute to play.

“We wouldn’t have likely been in the spot for Cody to hit that shot without the play of Dalton tonight,” coach Bishop said. “Dalton’s been a huge spark off the bench the past several weeks.”

Dalton’s 31 points also game with four rebounds and an assist.

Fayette’s scoring leader this season, senior Kyle Schleeter, did not disappoint. He banked 29 points to go along with five rebounds, an assist, and three steals. Hilgedick’s game-winner capped off nine points on the night, combined with three rebounds, two assists, and a steal.

Sophomore Chase Allen led the team in rebounds with seven while adding three points and one assist.

“It was great having two guys with more than 29 points. I’m really proud of all the Falcons,” Bishop said.

The Falcons will take on fourth-seeded Centralia for the third-place trophy on Saturday. Tipoff is at 2:45 in Harrisburg. For those without tickets, the game will be live-streamed on YouTube.com.
