Fayette edged 3-2 at Westran

Hannah Quint gave Fayette a 2-1 lead with a single to right field in the third inning, but the Falcons (5-2) were unable to hold the lead in a 3-2 loss at Westran (7-2) on Thursday.

Quint finished 2-2 with a walk and an RBI, but twice she was left on third to end an inning after she reached base with no outs.

“We’re getting some girls on base and we’re stealing a lot of bases and we’re getting some girls in scoring position but we’re just having a little hard time either making contact in the right spots or getting that clutch hit,” coach Mike James said.

Jordyn Ball gave up two earned runs on just two hits and four walks, while striking out seven.

Westran put the first two runners on base with no outs in the first inning and again in the fourth and scored a run each time with a sacrifice fly.

Westran scored the winning run on an error with two outs in the fifth inning. An earlier error allowed that runner to move into scoring position after a one-out single.

“We faced a lot of tough moments, and like last night we made some good adjustments and pitched out of some trouble,” James said.

“There was a lot of good in this game, we’ve just got to hit the ball a little better. If we do, we’ll win these games. These games are tough, against good teams. Sometimes all it takes is one mistake and that’s what it was tonight pretty much.”

Fayette scored a run in the first inning without a hit as Preslee Sunderland drew a leadoff walk, stole second, advanced to third on a dropped third strike, and took home plate on a passed ball.

Addison Newell went 2-3 at the plate and Abby Nation was 1-3.

Over the last two nights, Fayette has 11 total hits and has allowed just five in a pair of one-run losses.

“If we’re pitching well and playing defense, you’re always going to be in the game,” James said. “And then hopefully we’ll get into the routine of playing, get some more at bats under our belt and the hitting should improve and we’ll get going.”
