Fayette finds another gear in overtime win over Paris

Posted

Momentum was firmly on the side of Paris at the end of regulation on Tuesday.

Fayette had let a 10-point fourth-quarter lead slip away as the Coyotes closed the quarter on a 14-4 run to tie it up at 46-46.

On the Falcons’ first possession of overtime Kyle Schleeter pulled up from the 3-point line and gave Fayette the lead once again. After a turnover, it was Cale Polson’s turn to let a shot fly.

Up 52-46, the momentum had swung back to the Falcons. Hard.

Josh Henderson blocked the next Coyote shot and Schleeter scored three more times before Paris would score its first point of the extra period. Fayette won by a final score of 61-49.

“We just drove and kicked and played with intensity,” Schleeter said. “We just finished through it.”

Schleeter was 8-9 from the free-throw line and finished with 31 points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists.

The Falcons struggled with turnovers in the first half and trailed 19-15 at the break. Fayette matched its first half scoring total with 15 points in overtime.

“I knew we could run on them,” said Polson, who finished with 17 points, seven steals and four assists.

“They had the momentum going into overtime, but I knew in the huddle that we had it. We just caught fire.”

Fayette allowed just six points in the third quarter, but the Coyotes made six 3-pointers in the second half, including the game-tying shot with four seconds left.

“You hate not closing out in the fourth, but that’s a pretty good basketball team and they hit big shots,” coach Jon Bishop said.

“I knew we had a chance in the OT. We were playing well, we were flowing well.

“Winning on senior night, I prayed for it to be honest with you. You want to be able to do that, you want to be able to finish like that.”

Cody Hilgedick was had five points, two assists and two steals. Zach Henderson was 2-3 from the floor for four points, five rebounds and four assists.

Senior Grant Himmelmann had two points, three rebounds and an assist in the overtime thriller.

“It was a great win, it was exciting to be in the locker room after that,” Himmelmann said.

“We got out there, we really focused. Cale and Kyle hit a bunch of big shots and we kept the energy up.”

Fayette 72, Schuyler Co. 50

Fayette let Schuyler County hang around for about a quarter and a half, until a 27-3 run turned a six-point game into a 30-point rout.

Kyle Schleeter was 5-9 from the 3-point line and led Fayette with 21 points in the 72-50 win.

Fayette scored 24 points in the first quarter, but led by just six points after surrendering 18 to the Rams, who average just 42 points per game.

Fayette coach Jon Bishop said the slow start came from a combination of a two-hour bus ride and playing a fourth game in five days.

“It’s a long trip, that’s what we ran into,” he said.  “I was glad we picked up the pace a little bit,  I know the full court pressure had a lot to do with it. I was glad we were able to show some energy there.”

A 6-0 run cut Fayette’s 32-20 lead in half in the second quarter.

“They’re struggling a little bit, but you see how much fight they have,” Bishop said about the Rams.

Cale Polson ended the run with a 3-pointer to put the Falcons back up by nine. Tyler Bartholomew stole the ball and Schleeter scored to put Fayette up 40-26 going into the half. Bartholomew and Zach Henderson scored on stick-back buckets as Fayette opened the second half with ten points in a row. Henderson made his third 3-point basket of the season to stretch the lead to 59-29. He had five points and six rebounds.

“We finished better,” Bishop said about the scoring run. “I thought early, even though our focus was not great on defense, we were not finishing.”

Josh Henderson had 12 points and seven rebounds. Polson had 19 points and Cody Hilgedick had six.

The Fayette boys finish the regular season at 13-9, winning seven of the last eight games.

“We need to refocus and go get ready for Slater on Tuesday,” Bishop said. “I’m proud of the guys for this week, going 3-1.”

Fayette 66, Brunswick 50

Fayette had a strong game on the glass, grabbing 17 offensive rebounds in a 66-50 win at Brunswick on Thursday. Josh Henderson had 10 boards and added six points.

Fayette led 14-10 after one quarter and 30-22 at halftime.

“They had outstanding ball movement so we spent a lot of time trying to make sure that the shooters didn’t have wide open looks and I thought we did a pretty good job of that,” Fayette coach Jon Bishop said. “We just opened it up a little bit and just kind of survived.”

Kyle Schleeter led Fayette in scoring with 15 points and seven rebounds. Cale Polson had 13 points. Zach Henderson and Cody Hilgedick each scored nine. Chase Allen had six points and six rebounds.
