The Fayette Lady Falcons pulled off a strong upset Monday night in the opening round of the 93rd Annual New Franklin Tournament. Sixth-seeded Fayette brought down third-seeded Sweet Springs 35-25.
The basketball tournament is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, in the state. Boys action was set to begin Tuesday night after this newspaper went to press.
In other action, the top-seeded Community girls easily handled Bunceton/Prairie Home 60-26. Fourth-seeded Pilot Grove took down the fifth-seeded Sturgeon girls 52-27.
Host team and second-seeded New Franklin handled the seventh-seeded Westran girls 57-27.
The Fayette and New Franklin girls will tipoff at 7:30 p.m. tonight (Wednesday) as they battle for a trip Friday night’s championship game.
