Fayette R-III offers free meals to students

Posted

The Fayette R-III school district is once again allowing students to purchase meals at no cost. The program began Tuesday, Sept. 22. The program is funded through the School Lunch Program/CARES Act.

Students in all grades may now receive breakfasts and lunches at no charge. The program is retroactive to September 1, which means meals purchased on lunch accounts will be refunded.

So far there has been a 44% increase in breakfasts and a 19% increase in lunches served as a result of the program.

Extra meals and milk-only purchases do not qualify for the program. It it not currently known how long the program will go on, but the district will notify families when the offer is scheduled to end.

“We are excited to be able to offer this opportunity for our families,” said Fayette Superintendent Jill Wiseman in an email to families.

A similar program was offered at the end of the 2019-2020 school year when the state shut down schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Fayette was one of the first schools in the state to make available free meals to every child up to the age of 18 who resided within the district. Fayette served a staggering 22,911 meals during the closure that ended in May.
