Meeting in regular session Tuesday night the Fayette R-III Board of Education approved continuing with the current heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system at Daly/Clark. The cost to replace the entire HVAC system for the Daly/Clark is $1.4 million. There is $696,000 available from the bond issue to replace the system.

Superintendent Tamara Kimball reported that Hilgedick Electric checked all current heating and cooling units and determined that all are working properly. The ventilation system is also appropriate for the size and occupancy of the building.

Kimball recommended that the District continue with the present system and repair and update units when needed and install air conditioning in the gym and cafeteria. The Bond Issue ballot language reads “complete heating, ventilation and air conditioning improvements at the elementary building” and the notes all indicate the system would be replaced.

However, Kimball said,  “It just isn’t necessary.” Kimball continued, “This will free up funds to address all the security and surveillance needs we have in both buildings.”

Kimball is also putting together an RFP (request for proposal) to obtain bids for security cameras and the web-based software that will allow the District to monitor all cameras from any computer, keyless entries that use programmable cards, and a secured entrance that would have all visitors pressing a button that would sound a buzzer and show the secretary who was out there on a special monitor.

Curriculum Director Jill Wiseman reported that the Columbia Golf Foundation is donating equipment and materials to physical education classes for kindergarten through fifth grade. There will be six golf lessons for the P.E. classes. They will also make a donation to the High School golf team.

Daly/Clark Principal Cheri Huster, Assistant Principal Christina Heet and Curriculum Director Jill Wiseman outlined the MoLead training they received.

In other business, the Board:
  • Approved the MSBA Full Policy Maintenance Agreement that enables the District to keep up with policy revisions and then have them posted online once they have been Board approved and submitted.
  • Approved the Academic Awards Ceremony for April 29 at 7 p.m.
  • Approved advertising for interest in a full summer school program to identify the level of interest of Fayette students as well as the surrounding schools. The program will run from June 2 through June 27. Credit recovery and enrichment classes will be offered.  Elementary students will meet Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Middle and high school students will meet from 7:30 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday. The proposal includes breakfast and lunch and transportation on scaled-back routes with three buses depending on student interest.
  • Approved adding to the pre-school services currently provided because of the addition of two Early Childhood Special Education class rooms provided by the bond issue. The District currently serves 32 students and will serve 60 students with the opportunity to enroll more 3-year-old children.
  • After lengthy discussion, approved the use of three school buses for Project Grad to go to Laser Lanes in Columbia. The drivers have to be certified school bus drivers.
