Fayette Together

A public benefit organization to support a diverse and inclusive community

Posted

A little more than two years ago, a group of interested and concerned individuals came together to explore ways of fostering inclusivity in the Fayette community. With the death of George Floyd serving as a catalyst for change, approximately 10 individuals met in July 2020. They chose an informal name for the initiative: the Fayette Social Justice Project.
The first order of business was a candid discussion about social justice and race relations in the Fayette community. This allowed the group to create guiding principles and goals. They also received diversity and equity training. One of the most important outcomes was facilitating important conversations to develop a more progressive community and …serve the underserved.”
In April 2021, the official name “Fayette Together” was chosen, and legal documents were filed with the State of Missouri. Fayette Together is a public benefit corporation formed for charitable purposes. A joint partnership with the Howard County Community Foundation gives the group legal status to operate as a 501c3 tax-deductible organization. Fayette Together’s goal is simple and straightforward: to support a diverse and inclusive community with clear reflections on the past, present, and future.
Today, the Fayette Together Board of Directors is comprised of 14 dedicated individuals: Marilyn Caul, Dr. Roger Drake, Michelle Ismael, Tim Jackman, Rev. Lue Lockridge-Lane, Rev. Susan McCollegan, Deb Miller, Tad Perry, Louann (Thogmorton) Shaner, Judy Strodtman, Dr. Hope Tinker, Jill Wiseman, Rev. Charlie Wright, Sr., and Dr. Keith Young. Officers include Mr. Jackman (Chair), Mrs. Shaner (Vice-Chair), Mrs. Caul (Secretary), and Rev. Lockridge-Lane (Treasurer).
…We have an awesome, talented, and diverse Board of Directors, who have worked tirelessly the past two and a half years to establish a sound structure and operating model,” said Mr. Jackman. “I am very pleased with the level of commitment and vision from each member, the input and support from the community, the successes achieved, and the opportunities that lie ahead to make a profound, positive impact on the community.”
Fayette Together has engaged in several local endeavors, including:
Juneteenth: Fayette Together was an integral part of the planning process in partnership with St. Paul United Methodist Church. The organization has sponsored a successful youth poster contest for the past two years.
Paige-Liberty Park Improvements: Several improvements have been made to the facilities, ball field, and playground equipment at Paige-Liberty Park through financial contributions and support from the city, community, and other interested partners. A mural created by local artist Charles Broadus depicts this park's rich history. Fayette Together Board Director Dr. Hope Tinker serves as facilitator of the project.
Fayette Reads Together: Fayette Together is developing a community book club to better understand historical and current challenges of equity and inclusivity. The Sum of Us, by Heather McGee, was the first group read during Juneteenth 2022. Additional books will be read during 2023.
Boys and Girls Club: Fayette Together worked in collaboration with Fayette Public Schools and other local organizations to assess outreach opportunities for youth. A steering committee led by Board Director Jill Wiseman is exploring the possibility of establishing a Boys and Girls Club in the community.
Community Events: Fayette Together is committed to participating in future community events. For example, Fayette’s Bicentennial celebrations in 2023, in partnership with Fayette Main Street, Inc., and the Fayette Area Heritage Association.
Anyone who would like to know more about Fayette Together should contact Mr. Jackman by email at taurus53tj@yahoo.com or by telephone at (573) 289-3714.
