Fayette’s Kyle Schleeter signs letter of intent to play at CMU

Posted

After scoring 1,785 points in his high school career, and earning all-conference and all-district honors in his sophomore, junior, and senior years, Fayette senior Kyle Schleeter knew every game he played his senior year would be a game where he would be defended by the opponent’s top—sometimes top two—defenders. Every team knew Schleeter was the man they wanted to nail down.

Last Thursday, Central Methodist did just that as they signed Schleeter to a letter of intent to play basketball for the Eagles.

It will be an uphill battle for Schleeter at Central as coach Jeff Sherman will have nine senior players on his roster. But hard work is not a stranger to Schleeter who was named Most Valuable Player for the 2020-21 season by the coaches of the Lewis & Clark Conference.

During his senior year, Schleeter had eight 30-point games as well as four double-doubles. He also led the Falcons in scoring in 23 of the 26 games they played.

Schleeter was not just an offensive standout. He excelled on the defensive end as well, leading the team in both steals and deflections.

Shooting 36% from the 3-point line during his high school career, Schleeter upped his game in as a senior by shooting 41% from 3-point land.

“I think CMU is a nice fit for Kyle. They play the same way he wants to, which is fast,” said Fayette coach Jon Bishop. “He will have to put his head down and work hard, but he has the passion and drive to do this. I am very proud of all he has done for our program.”

I just feel like CMU was my best option, being able to stay close to home,” Schleeter said. “I know a lot of people going to CMU. I just feel really blessed.

“Going to the district championship my senior year was the favorite moment of my high school career,” said Schleeter. “I’d just like to thank my parents, coaches and all my supporters that helped me through this journey.”

CMU coach Jeff Sherman said that like most freshmen, Schleeter will be part of the team’s varsity reserve program. “We’ve got 12 players on that program and it is a very strong program. We have probably the strongest development program in our conference and have had for a number of years. We are really excited to have a local player. Unfortunately, you don’t see players coming out of Fayette every year.”

“Kyle will get to play about 25 games this year on the reserve team and it will help us evaluate how he will play at that next level,” Sherman said.
