FHS, CMU bands to hold MMEA preview concert

Posted

The Fayette High School and the Central Methodist University concert bands will present a joint concert of music that will be performed at the Missouri Music Educators Association annual conference later this month.

The pre-MMEA concert will take place in the Fayette High School gymnasium at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 22, at the Fayette High School gym. The concert will feature the selections each of the bands will perform at the 2023 Missouri Music Educators Association In-Service Workshop/Conference.

Sunday’s performance is free and open to the public.

The FHS Band, under the direction of Elizabeth Betts and Lisa Dobbs, will perform at 8 a.m. on Friday, January 27. The CMU Band, under the direction of Prof. Skip Vandelicht, will perform at 9 a.m. on Saturday, January 28.

These concerts are not open to the public, so both bands wanted to perform their programs for the public to celebrate this honor.

Because the high school band will perform on a Friday, the Fayette school district has canceled classes that day, and will instead be in school on Monday, January 23.

The upcoming performance at MMEA will be the Fayette band’s sixth and the 10th for the legendary Central Methodist band.

Bands are selected to perform through an anonymous audition process, where a panel of judges from outside Missouri listens to the dozens of submitted recordings. Ten bands are selected to perform each year. Bands may only play every four years in the MMEA program.

The Fayette band’s performance will include such works as A Day in the Life by Patrick Roszell, Loch Lomond by JaRod Hall, Phasing Thunder by Brian Balmages, Go Galop by Henry Fillmore and arranged by Contorno, and Fracas by Randall Standridge, which was commissioned by the FHS band to honor their selection to perform at this year’s conference.

The CMU band will perform Morning, Noon, and Night in Vienna by Franz Von Suppe’ and arranged by Henry Fillmore, March by Dr. Ron Shroyer, Joyance by Claude T. Smith, and Oh, Henry! by Ryan Nowlin.
