Filing period for municipal, school board elections opens

Posted

The filing period for the April 4, 2023, municipal and school board elections opened on Tuesday, December 6. The deadline to file is the close of business on Tuesday, December 27.

All filings must be made with the governing body for which the candidate is running. For instance, school board filings must be made with that school district, and city council candidates must file at the respective City Halls. No filings will be accepted at the County Clerk’s office.

In Fayette, four city council seats will be up for grabs, including two-year terms for seats currently held by Alderpersons Grafton Cook (Southwest Ward), Peggy O’Connell (Northwest Ward), and Stephanie Ford (East Ward). Candidates in the Southwest Ward may also file to finish out the term for the seat currently occupied by Bekki Galloway. She was appointed to fill the seat after former Alderwoman Hope Smith declined to seek re-election. Galloway must now be elected by the voters to finish out the remainder of the term which expires in April 2024.

Voters in New Franklin will vote for four city council seats and the offices of Mayor and City Collector. Incumbents are Rick Newell (Ward 1) and James Painter (Ward 2). A two-year term for an open Ward 3 seat will also be on the ballot. The seat was formerly occupied by Mary Beth Sokolski, who resigned during her term. Another empty seat in Ward 2 will be open for one year to finish out the term. The seat was held by Leslie Lyons, who vacated the seat mid-term.

Also up for election are the offices of Mayor and City Collector. Robbey Harvey assumed the office of Mayor in August 2021 following the mid-term resignation of Newton Arbogast. He was then elected unopposed to finish out the term in April 2022. A four-year term for City Collector will be on the ballot as well. The current collector is Lydia Sartain.

The City of Franklin will have one seat open in each of its two wards.

In Glasgow, city council seats for the North, Central, and South wards will be open. Current incumbents are Susan Freese (South), Renna Bean (Central), and Fred Foley (South). The terms are for two years.

Two city council seats will be open in Armstrong, one each in the West and East wards. The East Ward incumbent is Becky Kurtz. The West Ward seat has been vacant since it was resigned by Travis Gregory.

Three seats on the Fayette Board of Education will be open for election. Those seats are currently occupied by first-term incumbents Aaron Bentley and Sarah Wies, and two-term incumbent Shauna Young.

Three seats will also be open for the New Franklin Board of Education. Current incumbents are board president Jeff Chitwood, vice president Sam Hackman, and board member Judd Evans.

The Glasgow school district will have three seats opening for its Board of Education. Those seats are currently held by David McKenzie, Chad R. Fuemmeler, and Kent Sanders.

Voters in the Harrisburg and Higbee school districts will also elect three seats each to their respective school boards. In Harrisburg, seats currently held by board vice president Kathleen Van Roekel, Scott Eaton, and Heidi DeMuth will be on the ballot. In Higbee, seats held by board president Susan Ware, secretary Morgan Rockett, and first-term incumbent Ernie Boggs, Jr. will be up for election. Ware has served on the board since 2007, and Rockett has been on the board since 2011.
