What potentially could have become a catastrophic fire downtown Tuesday morning was prevented by Fayette firemen. Employees at a building located at 122 South Main Street, a block south of the downtown square across from City Hall, noticed smoke coming from a breaker box. Automatic safety measures kicked in, stopping the flow of electricity to the breaker box, but not before significant heat damaged the inside and created the smoke. The Fayette Fire Department was dispatched and quickly prevented a fire from breaking out.
Ultimately, damage was estimated to be contained to the breaker box and no injuries were reported.
The building is owned by Endless Options, and formerly housed Walker-Winter Insurance.
