Former church gives back to community

Posted

It’s the end of an era for the New Franklin Disciples of Christ Christian Church, but not the end of its place in the community and local history. The church held a decommissioning service on July 31, 2016, and the site was subsequently given to the City of New Franklin.

The site includes a monument to the church, gazebo and seating, to give it a park-like atmosphere and the city also received $10,000 for upkeep of the premises.

The church members were left to cash in investments made by previous church’s board treasurers, and to dispose of the organization’s remaining bank account funds; but the COVID-19 pandemic stalled the progress as members refrained from meeting until July 18 of this year.

In that meeting, they discussed and agreed on distribution of the church’s remaining funds to several local organizations in order to give back to the community which nurtured it prior to its decommissioning. Recipients of the donations include many local churches in New Franklin and surrounding communities, the Mount Pleasant Cemetery, and the Opal Parish Memorial Fund, which supports other Disciples of Christ Christian churches in the Howard County area. These include the Disciples of Christ congregations in Boonesboro and Fayette.

The members of the New Franklin Disciples of Christ Christian Church would like to thank everyone who supported the church over the years.
