Former Glasgow teammates face off in Wildcat Classic final

Posted

Dillon Yung and Jay Thompson played (and won) a lot of games together in Yellowjacket jerseys, but on Saturday the former Glasgow teammates and cousins were coaching on opposing benches for the final game of the Slater Wildcat Classic.

“It was a surreal experience for our first matchup to be in a championship game in an atmosphere like that,” Thompson said. “It’s an opportunity we’re not sure if we will get again.”

Yung’s Slater squad defeated Thompson’s Jamestown team 56-44 in the title game. It was the Wildcats’ first championship in their home tournament since 2005.

“I’ve got a group of seniors that have worked so hard to get to where they are, for this group, it means a lot to them,” Yung said.

Both Yung and Thompson have had success as young head coaches. Yung and the Wildcats are off to a 16-1 start, putting his career totals at 54-20. Thompson is 10-7 this season with a 25-20 overall record in his second season at Jamestown.

Slater is coming off of back-to-back district championships and Jamestown also won a district title in Thompson’s first season at the helm.

“We talk almost every day,” Yung said. “We’re always giving each other advice on things that we need to do. I love seeing him have the success that he’s had.”

Yung and Thompson played together on the 2011-12 state third-place team for Glasgow coach Mick Cropp.

“It’s pretty exciting really, I’m pretty proud of them,” Cropp said.

“Pretty proud that they’ve got their teams rolling. I don’t have much success against either one of them, I guess we coached them up too well when they were in school. I’m happy for both of them.”
