At the Franklin City Council's May 13 meeting, cleanup of the city's yard waste and residents' large solid waste items dominated the agenda.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources contacted city officials about improprieties in the city's municipal yard waste site. It has been reported to DNR that furniture, carpet, and tires have been placed in the yard waste pile. The city was informed that only brush may be burned, and that the non-brush items must be removed from the brush pile and disposed of properly. City officials have made arrangements to comply with DNR regulations.

Also to be disposed of are large nonhazardous waste items. Franklin residents have expressed a desire to have a city-wide large-item trash pickup. Mayor Pro-Tem Beverly Hunt will gather bids from local waste disposal services.

Alderman Chris Monteer recommended installation of a chain-link fence around the new city park. The fence will help safeguard children at play. Prices for fencing will be researched and the board will consider the matter at their next meeting.

In other business, the council:

'Will take sealed bids for road repair, ditch work, and other projects requiring large equipment. Bids will be opened and read July 8.

' Learned that DNR has carried out follow-up inspections of Boggs Salvage Yard and that the salvage yard is in compliance with environmental regulations.

'Will pursue a lighting grant from AmerenUE to install pole lights around the city park.

' Will investigate a landscaping grant also offered by AmerenUE.
