Future Eagle surprised with softball signing day

Posted

Mara Pawelek woke up from a nap on Saturday to see her kitchen decorated in the colors of Central Methodist. The Francis Howell junior, who had committed to the Eagle softball program nine days earlier, asked her mother what was happening.

From the computer, her mom answered, “Everyone is getting on here to watch you sign!”

Unable to hold a traditional signing at the high school, Pawelek’s mother arranged a group video conference with softball teammates to give Mara a special moment during the coronavirus chapter.

“All of a sudden I got really hot and my face got super red,” Palewek said. “It was all super fun though because I got to talk to my teammates for a little while.”

Her best friend will be nine hours away at college during the high school’s signing day next year, but she was present for the virtual meeting.

“It was amazing to be able to see all those people for something as special as my signing was,” Pawelek said.

The future Eagle will graduate and join Central Methodist in 2021. Pawelek was Academic All-Conference last season with Francis Howell. In her most recent season of travel softball with St. Louis Heat 02, she hit .300 with five RBI.

She joins an Eagle softball program that has won 40 games in four of the past six full seasons.

“The coaches at CMU are just super sweet and all have such a great, strong bond with each other,” Pawelek said. “The program is amazing and put in so much work to be as good as they are.”
