Glasgow baseball joins area teams in youth movement

With the Missouri State High School Activities Association shutting down the 2020 high school baseball season and players that were seniors in 2020 losing that senior season, the 2021 season has become a year in which youth has prevailed.

While some of the younger players were able to play summer baseball in 2020, even that season was cut short due to some positive COVID testing. This leads to the 2021 season seeming like a fresh start.

Glasgow head coach Mick Cropp boasts the highest number of seniors in the Advertiser area with three. Of those three, Trevor Sanders and Carson Frevert have the most experience with this being the fourth year for the two. Tavareon Patrick is hitting the field for the first time as a high school player this year. Frevert will be an integral part of the Jacket starting pitching rotation. Rounding out that staff will be juniors Drew Sanders and Zane Johanning along with sophomores Deklan Himmelberg and Josh Korte.

Catching that rotation will be left mostly to Himmelberg. As a sophomore, he went through spring training in 2020 and was able to play the next fall during which time he was able to garner some much-needed time behind the plate. That experience will help in the long run as he develops a cohesiveness with the starting pitchers. Backing up Himmelberg when he needs a break or when he is on the mound himself will be Sanders and freshman Lane Fuemmeler.

The infield surrounding those pitchers will normally consist of Korte at first base, with Sanders lining up at second. Sophomore Alan Westhues will man the third base post while Frevert will play shortstop. Sophomore Colton Boss along with freshmen Laken Carmack and Fuemmeler will act as backups at all positions.

The outfield will be patrolled by Boss in left with Johanning in center and junior Skyler Morris in right. Backing up the starting three will be senior Tavareon Patrick, sophomore Lucas Schaefer and freshman Kaden Carmack.

If the starting pitching gets into trouble, Cropp looks to call on a multitude of relief pitchers to stop the bleeding as he lists eight of the 15 players on the roster as relievers. Frevert, Trevor Sanders,  Johanning, Drew Sanders, Himmelberg, Korte, Westhues, and freshman Kaden Carmack will come in from the bullpen as needed.

The starting lineup looks to shape up as follows: Frevert will lead off followed by Trevor Sanders. Drew Sanders will hit from the three hole, while Josh Korte will cleanup in the four spot. Deklan Himmelberg will hit fifth, followed by Alan Westhues and Colton Boss. Zane Johanning will hit eighth and Skyler Morris will hit from the nine spot. Naturally all of that could change depending on who happens to be pitching on any given day.

When the YellowJackets get on base, expect them to be active. “We have a little bit of team speed when we get on base,” said coach Cropp.

Sitting at 0-3 early in the season, Glasgow is trying to put a notch in the win column. Starting the season out 0-3 following an 0-6 fall season, one might expect the team to be a little down. They have yet to back down, however, as evidenced by getting off to a 7-0 lead against Fayette in the second game of the season. Fayette came back and finished strong to win the game 13-7 in a hard-fought extra inning duel.

Glasgow has plenty of time to turn their season around with 12 games remaining on the regular season schedule. Only two of the teams on the remaining schedule, Keytesville (with Brunswick and Northwestern) and Salisbury, are above .500 at this time.

“Our goal is to play as many seven-inning games as possible this year and hope to get a few wins in this spring,” said coach Cropp.
