Glasgow boys take first in district track, girls take second

The Glasgow boys’ track and field team jumped on the back of its relay teams and rode them to a district championship on Saturday.

The relay teams competed in four races and won them all, with the smallest margin of victory being 1.44 seconds, a lifetime in track terms. Overall, Glasgow blew the competition away, outscoring second-place Wellsville-Middleton 163.50 to 111.50.

The 4x100-meter relay team of freshman Finn Johnson, sophomore Ryan Graves, junior Ethan Martin, and sophomore Colton Sellmeyer amassed a time of 48.51 to finish first and make the sectional meet next week at Lutheran North High School in St. Louis.

In the 4x200, Finn led off again but ran with an entirely different team as senior Christian DeWolfe ran the second leg, followed by classmate Robert Gouge and anchorman Ethan Martin. The team completed the distance in 1:41.06 to earn first-place points.

The 4x400-meter relay team of DeWolfe, junior Edris Hamilton, classmate Ethan Martin, and sophomore Colton Sellmeyer took first with a time of 3:47.60.

Glasgow’s 4x800-meter team, consisting of freshman Jackson Strodtman, sophomore Colton Sellmeyer,  freshman Zachary Sayler, and Hamilton wrapped up the relay races by defeating the closest competitor by 13 seconds.

In total, the Glasgow relay teams scored 40 of the Yellowjackets’ 163.50 points.

While the relay teams carried a good portion of the load for the Yellowjackets, the rest of the team pulled a great deal of weight as well. Edris Hamilton and Ethan Martin finished first and second in the 400-meter dash. Hamilton didn’t stop there, wrapping up fourth in the 800.

Freshman Jackson Strodtman and classmate Zachary Sayler finished second and third, respectively, in the 1600-meter run, then each moved up a notch in the 3200 to finish first and second.

Senior Christian DeWolfe used both the 110- and 300-meter hurdles to punch his ticket to sectionals, finishing third in each race.

In the pole vault, senior Robert Gouge took the gold with a vault of 3.35 meters. Freshman Finn Johnson cleared 2.60 to take second.

Not to be outdone, Glasgow’s throwers showed up big, earning 19 points on the day. Senior Trevor Fuemmeler finished second in the shot with a heave of 11.59 meters.

Freshman AJ Westhues finished third in the discus with a toss of 33.16, while sophomore Colton Sellmeyer finished fourth in the javelin throw. His throw covered 36.80 meters.

The Lady Jackets fought to a second-place finish, falling behind Silex High School 149-123. Senior Malia Carmack and freshman Addison Barringhaus were responsible for over half of the LadyJackets’ points as Carmack put 29 on the board and Barringhaus added 35.

Carmack amassed her points by finishing second in the 400-meter dash and the 800. Carmack then moved to the field events and picked up a first in the long jump and a third-place finish in the triple jump.

Barringhaus finished second in the 800-meter run and the 1600-meter run, and first in the 3200-meter run. She then ran the lead-off leg of the 4x800-meter relay and finished second along with junior Macie Parks, freshman Shalynn Norris, and senior They Sellmeyer.

Other sectional qualifiers for the LadyJackets were junior Olivia Fuemmeler who finished second in the long jump, and freshman Kaitlyn Monnig who cleared 2.30 meters in the pole vault. Fuemmeler also covered a distance of 9.83 meters in the triple jump.

Junior Karlie Monnig finished third in the shot put with a throw of 9.35 meters.
