Glasgow Lady Jackets: Our style? We work hard

The 2019-20 Glasgow Lady Jackets went 13-14 on the year and lost one senior, point guard Krista Monnig. That leaves three seniors and two juniors in the starting lineup for the 2020-21 season and that means they have a good chance to make improvements on last season’s record.

Head coach Molly Monnig’s varsity squad has several returnees of whom to speak, but also boasts several players who are not necessarily newcomers, but will fill in different roles, therefore getting more playing time.

Senior Emma Massie is one such player. “She’ll be getting more playing time this year as she’s kind of stepped up and we are really trying to utilize her length,” said coach Monnig.

“One of our true newcomers is sophomore Macie Parks. She didn’t play varsity last year, but early on this year. She’s done a really good job shooting the basketball from the perimeter and has made some good decisions with the basketball.

“Another sophomore, Karlie Monnig, is a physical presence inside. She rebounds the basketball well and gives us much needed size,” Monnig said.

“We also have another senior, Jamila White, who had moved to Columbia for a couple of years but is back now. She is very good defensively and helps us handle the ball a little bit also.”

The starting lineup will feature three seniors, Hadley Sanders, Miranda Cooper and Emma Massie. Rounding out the starting five, will be juniors Malia Carmack and Brenna Hubbard.

“Sanders will run the point this year. Really, she’s kind of like our motor, she works really hard and the girls follow her lead when it comes to the defensive side of the floor,”said Monnig.

“Cooper is another senior that never stops. She is very, very aggressive. She’s undersized, but she plays much bigger than she is.”

“Both Carmack and Hubbard make the offense go. Malia shoots the ball really well ands gotten better at handling the ball this year while Brenna is a force inside and she can also finish well on the perimeter. A lot of our offense tuns through those two,” said Monnig.

“Darby Reynolds is another senior that will come off the bench and give Brenna breaks. She is really the glue, the kid everyone listens to.”

“Defensively, we want to be sound and give lots of effort. Offensively, we want

to play team basketball, spread it around. Last year we killed ourselves with turnovers. This year we want to take care of the ball,” Monnig said.

“It’s a really hard year to make any kind of prediction due to so many ups and down. We have a lot of potential and if the girls continue to work hard and continue to play unselfishly, we can have a very good season,” said Monnig. “Our style? We work hard!”

After a loss to Malta Bend on Thursday, which snapped a four-game winning streak, the Lady Jackets stand at 4-2 on the year with wins against Brunswick, Westran, Cairo and Pilot Grove. After the break, the fifth-seeded girls will travel to Salisbury to take on the fourth-seeded Meadville Lady Eagles at 7:30 p.m. in the Salisbury Invitational Tournament on January 4.
