Harrisburg AD Fessler to join MSHSAA staff

Harrisburg High School’s loss looks to be the Missouri State High School Activities Association’s gain. MSHSAA last week announced Harrisburg athletic director Doug Fessler as having been approved by the MSHSAA Board of Directors to join the Association’s Executive Staff as Assistant Executive Director. Also Joining the MSHSAA staff in the same capacity will be Marty M. Marsh of Springfield.

Fessler has been a fixture at Harrisburg high school for the past 15 years. He has taught business courses there since 2006. Before taking on the athletic director responsibilities in 2013, Fessler was also a coach in addition to teaching, serving as the head coach for both the boys and girls golf teams as well as assisting with the basketball and baseball teams.

In the classroom, Fessler taught a wide range of business courses including Personal Finance, Business Technology, Sports & Entertainment Management, Accounting, Web Page Design, and Yearbook. He has also served as the FBLA sponsor. 

Prior to joining the Harrisburg staff, Fessler was an Assistant Athletic Director at Central Methodist University for three years. He also served as the head coach for the women’s basketball team and as the Sports Information Director for the athletic department. Fessler first joined the CMU staff as an instructor in the Physical Education Department.

Fessler also served as the Head Women’s Basketball Coach and Sports Information Director at Dana College in Blair, Nebraska.

A graduate of the University of Central Missouri, Fessler earned a bachelor’s of science degree in business management. He went on to earn a Master of Education in Athletic Administration from the University of Missouri in 1996 while earning a second master’s degree in 2009 from William Woods University. In 2010, he completed work on a Specialist of Education degree also from William Woods.

Fessler will be overseeing the sports of baseball, basketball, and softball.

Marsh will handle soccer, speech, debate, and theatre as well as the InsideOut Initiative for the Association.

A Springfield native, Marsh has most recently served as the Assistant Director of Athletics and Student Activities for Springfield Public Schools.
