Harrisburg boys stumble in tourn. opener

The Harrisburg boys ran into a buzzsaw to begin their own tournament. Seeded third, Harrisburg failed to sink a field goal for the first nine minutes of the game. Meanwhile, second-seeded Hallsville exploded out to the gate and never let up to win 71-41.

Harrisburg scored just four points in the first quarter, all free throws. Hallsville’s defensive pressure and sheer athleticism were on full display as the Indians put up 18 points over the opening eight minutes and went into halftime up 35-15.

Harrisburg simply could not match the frenetic play of Hallsville and was outscored every quarter. But the Bulldogs did get a second-half spark from 6-2 junior Jace Carr who scored eight of his team-high 12 points in the third quarter. He was the only Harrisburg player to reach double figures. Sophomore Brayden Ott scored eight points on the night and Anthony Alicia picked up seven points off the bench.

Harrisburg made 12 of 14 free-throw attempts on the night, eight of which came during the fourth quarter.

Six-foot senior Jalen George paced Hallsville with eight first-quarter points on a pair of baskets from 3-point range and two made free throws. He added another three in the second quarter. He finished with 18 points on the night and was 7-7 from the charity stripe. Junior AJ Austene scored 18 points and was 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Senior Cameron Loyd added 11 points.

Hallsville scored 33 of their 71 total points from 3-point distance and made all 19 free-throw attempts.

Harrisburg was scheduled to return to action Tuesday night against fifth-seeded Fayette. The two teams met just 13 days prior, with Fayette picking up the conference victory at home 59-50.

On Wednesday, Hallsville takes on Fayette at 7:45 in Hallsville. Tipoff is at 7:45 p.m.

In other opening-round action, the Centralia girls, seeded second, defeated fifth-seeded Tolton 47-32, and the top-seeded Fulton boys defeated the sixth-seeded Missouri Military Academy 66-44. The first-seeded Hallsville girls won 65-45 over fourth-seeded Futon.
