Harrisburg boys whip MMA for fifth place in own tournament

The Harrisburg boys ran the gamut in three games during their inaugural basketball tournament. Seeded third they were on both sides of lopsided games and won a nailbiter against rival Fayette in round two. On Friday, they capped off their tournament play with a 60-35 win over Missouri Military Academy to claim the fifth-place plaque.

“With pool play, everyone went 1-1, and we were on the short end of the stick on the tiebreaker. But that’s kind of what we deserved after our game against Hallsville on Monday,” said Harrisburg coach Kyle Fisher.

Harrisburg opened up with an uncharacteristic blowout loss against second-seeded Hallsville 71-41, before returning the following night with a three-point win against Fayette. After two days of rest, the Bulldogs finished things off with a 25-point win.

“I’m proud of the way our guys bounced back against Fayette on Tuesday,” Fisher said.

The Bulldogs took no chances early on against sixth-seeded MMA on Friday. They shot ahead 17-2 after one quarter on diversified scoring and energetic defense. Four Harrisburg players scored in that first frame led by junior Jace Carr with six points. Six players contributed to a scoring surge in the second quarter that put the Bulldogs ahead 31-11 at halftime.

“We knew we had to get out to a good start tonight,” Fisher said. “We could mix and match defenses, get into passing lanes, and pressure them. And it was good to get a lot of guys in tonight.”

Ten of Harrisburg’s 12 players made it into the scoring book, led by senior Anthony Alicea with 14 points off the bench. Eleven of his points came in the first half.

“He came off and gave us a huge lift. Same with Austin Darwent,” Fisher said. “I give credit to those guys coming off the bench.”

Darwent, a sophomore, finished with six points on the night.

Senior Tanner Lanes scored 11 points and Carr banked nine. Lanes was also named to the All-Tournament team. He scored 42 points in Harrisburg’s three tournament games, 25 of which came against Fayette.

This marks the first year for Harrisburg to host its own tournament. “It’s great to get our own tournament. We’ve been trying to get it for three years,” Fisher said. He credits Athletic Director Doug Fessler for getting it off the ground.

In a season greatly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, Harrisburg held games at two different locations. While most games were in the Bulldogs’ home gym, half of the early-round games were held at nearby Hallsville.

The Bulldogs jump right back into Lewis & Clark Conference play tonight (Wednesday) with a road game at Paris.
