Harrisburg girls come from behind to take down Glasgow in district semis

The Harrisburg Bulldogs put on a display in the second half of the Class 2 District 7 semifinal game against rival Glasgow Lady Jackets on Wednesday to lead them to a 47-32 come-from-behind victory.

Although the final score seemed to be somewhat lopsided, looking at the first half score would lead one to believe otherwise. At the end of the first quarter, Harrisburg, seeded second, led by a score of only 10-9 as Glasgow climbed on the back of junior Malia Carmack who poured in seven of their nine points in the first stanza.

Glasgow, seeded third, doubled its score in the second quarter while holding Harrisburg to just five points to go into halftime with an 18-15 lead.

At the half, Harrisburg coach Ryan Richardson knew he needed to draw up a play that would give his team an early spark to get them focused. On the first throw in of the half, 6’1” senior forward Halle Baden took the inbounds pass, turned and hit a 3-pointer that did just that.

“We drew up a 3-point play coming out. We didn’t get the first look and we were able to actually get about the third look out of it and we were able to knock it down,” Richardson explained. “Believe it or not, that might have been the best play of the game.”

That play kicked off a 15-6 Harrisburg run that lasted the length of the third quarter and put them in the lead 30-24. Senior Baylie Combs lit up the board for 10 of the Lady Bulldogs 15 points third-quarter points.

Harrisburg continued to rely on Combs’ effectiveness as she scored nine of her team’s 17 points in the final quarter. She led all scorers with 26 points followed by Baden with six for the Harrisburg girls. Seniors Olivia Fischer and Kailey Franklin along with sophomore Carli Ellis each contributed four points, and sophomore Brecca Thornhill added three.

The Lady Jackets were paced by Carmack with 12, followed by junior Breanna Hubbard and sophomore Macie Parks with eight apiece. Senior Emma Massie rounded out the scoring with four.

This game marks the end of the Glasgow season as they finish with a record of 14-9.

Harrisburg, the No. 2 seed in the bracket, moves to 12-15 on the season. The Bulldogs move on to battle the top seed, Salisbury, Friday at 6 p.m. at The Dome in Salisbury.
