Harrisburg girls fall short against Moberly

Posted

The youthful Harrisburg Lady Bulldogs went into Moberly last Wednesday knowing they would have a battle on their hands. At times they kept pace with the Lady Spartans but ultimately came up short, falling 53-36. “I really thought we played well in some stretches and showed we can play with anyone,” said Harrisburg head coach Ryan Richardson.

“In our last three games, we have played against two state-ranked teams and arguably one of the better area teams in Scotland County, Mexico, and Moberly,” said Richardson. “Our staff and players knew what we were up against during this stretch before Christmas and we wanted to truly see where we were as a team.”

During that stretch, the Lady Bulldogs finished 0-3 and were outscored by an average of 24 points against schools that are state ranked and in larger classes.

The Lady Spartans jumped out to a 13-9 lead after the first quarter and slipped further behind by the end of the half by a score of 23-18. In the third quarter, Moberly added 14 points to Harrisburg’s six to make the score 37-22 in favor of the Lady Spartans. Harrisburg fought back in the fourth quarter, scoring 12 points, but Moberly’s lead and an additional 15 points proved to be too much for Harrisburg in a 53-36 defeat.

Junior Carli Ellis battled inside the lane all night against a big Moberly team. The 5’11” junior paced the Lady Bulldogs with 20 hard-fought points while sophomore Emma Fischer put in seven. Junior Brecca Thornhill added four to go along with sophomore Abby Rooson’s three. Junior Charlea Winscott topped off the Bulldog scoring with two free throws in the second quarter.

“Our schedule doesn’t get any easier as we continue to test our young team, but we are very optimistic about where we are at and where we know we can finish,” said Richardson.

The girls will host Father Tolton tonight at 7:30 p.m., then travel to Brookfield on January 3 for a 6 p.m. tilt. That game begins a four-game road swing for the Lady Bulldogs. After Brookfield, they will play Marceline on January 6, followed by Battle on January 8, before heading to Knox County on January 11.

On January 13 they return home to take on Paris at 6 p.m.
