The Harrisburg Lady Bulldogs went up against the Class 4 Fulton Hornets on Saturday as part of the Harrisburg-Ramey Showcase, and came away with a 52-41 win.
To achieve the win, the Lady Bulldogs had to overcome what has become something of a traditional first-half deficit after falling behind 23-16 at intermission.
“It’s kind of our M.O.,”said head coach Ryan Richardson. “I told the girls at halftime, ‘We’ve got to be tired of doing it this way.’”
Coach Ryan Richardson’s halftime speech was taken to heart by the team, which won the third quarter 19-2 to take a 35-25 lead.
“After the game we talked about how we may have to change our approach a little bit,” said Richardson. “We may change our pregame a little bit to get ourselves ready to go. But you can tell, once we settle into what we want to do, in the second half, we’ve been able to execute at a pretty high level.”
While the defense was not as strong in the fourth quarter, Harrisburg still outscored the Hornets 17-16 to win the game by a nine-point margin, 52-41.
Sophomore Emma Fischer paced the Lady Bulldogs by scoring 10 points, eight of which came in the second-half surge.
Three Lady Bulldogs, juniors Charlea Winscott, and Brecca Thornhill, along with sophomore Abby Rosson, posted nine points apiece.
Junior Carli Ellis added seven points. Freshman Charlotte Canote scored five points while classmate Ella Schwandt added three points, all on free throws in the fourth quarter.
“We did a better job of not playing conservative,” said Richardson. “We went out and played the way we teach them to play, pressing the tempo on both ends of the floor and finding the role that we’re asking them to do. We’ve got a few more games before districts and we have a lot of things we need to keep learning.”
The Lady Bulldogs put their 12-9 record up against L&C Conference foe Schuyler County on Tuesday night after The Advertiser went to press. They will host 15-4 Hallsville tonight at 6 p.m. before welcoming 1-18 Westran in a conference matchup at 6 p.m. on Friday.
