Harrisburg lost a one-run game at home Monday night in the Class 2 state sectional to Putnam County, 1-0.

The Bulldogs end the season with a record of 18-9.

Harrisburg starter Logan Fritts allowed the game’s only run on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts in 6.2 innings on the mound.

Bulldogs sophomore Isaac DeMuth finished off the final batter in six pitches, inducing a ground ball from Brayden McReynolds for the final out of the top of the seventh.

The lone run was scored in the top of the fifth, even as the Harrisburg defense made a triple play to end the inning. Following a single and walk, Putnam County sophomore Kooper Hornaday reached on an error to load the bases.

On the next pitch, Vincent Jones grounded to Harrisburg shortstop Brayden Ott, who made the throw to second baseman Bryce Ott for the out. He then threw out the runner advancing to third. Nicholas Morris was then doubled off at third, but not before McReynolds scored from third base to give the Midgets a one-run lead.

Putnam County’s three-man pitching battery allowed three hits and combined for six walks but allowed no runs to score.

Morris earned the win after surrendering no runs or hits. He issued two walks and struck out three batters in 3.1 innings. Jones allowed one hit and three walks in 2.2 innings of relief. Owen Ream took the save, allowing two hits and one walk in the seventh inning.

DeMuth led Harrisburg at the plate. He finished 1-for-2 with a double in the sixth. Brayden Ott and Keagan Morris both singled.

Harrisburg had a chance to score late in the game. Morris led off the bottom of the seventh with a single, followed by a walk by  Brayden Ott. But Putnam County’s defense remained firm. Following a flyout by Bryce Ott, Anthony Alicea grounded into a fielder’s choice double play to end the game and the season for the Bulldogs.

Putnam County, now 21-7, advances to the state quarterfinals, where the Midgets will face Salisbury (22-1) today (Wednesday).
