Harrisburg sends 12 to state track and field meet

Posted

While the Harrisburg Bulldog and Lady Bulldog track teams did not finish in first place as they have been accustomed to over the last several weeks, they did set themselves up nicely heading into the state meet next weekend.

With sophomore record holder Hunter Cole sidelined with an injury and awaiting an MRI this week, it would have seemed the boys’ team might be at a disadvantage. But the Bulldogs fought through that adversity and qualified six athletes in five events for state.

Senior Travis Gardiner led the team in qualifications by winning the 300-meter hurdles and finishing fourth in the 110-meter hurdles. He also joined senior teammate Jace Carr, junior Harley Whitaker, and freshman Trace Combs to finish fourth in the 4x400 meter relay.

Senior Tanner Fike finished third in the javelin with a throw of 148-02.75.

There was discussion among Missouri State High School Activities Association officials prior to the shot put event as to whether the gravel area set up for competition was deep enough to hold the event due to the distances that eventual winner Hayden Dixon of Schuyler County and Harrisburg senior Brayton Stephenson, might be able to achieve. After warmups and more discussion, no changes were made and the much-anticipated contest was held. Dixon finished first with a throw of 17.52 meters, followed by Stephenson in second with a distance of 16.51 meters.

The scores of the qualifiers and the other Bulldog athletes allowed the team to wrap up the day in third place with 187 total points behind boys’ champion Monroe City with 333 points and second-place finisher Highland with 323 points.

The Lady Bulldogs, with 178 points, finished fourth in the sectional behind winner Monroe City (277), Clark County (265), and Marceline (211). Harrisburg also qualified five athletes in six events with sophomore standout Kaydence Timbrook leading the way. Timbrook qualified in the 100- and 200-meter events. Timbrook continued to better her own school record in this meet by finishing third in the 200 with a time of 26.99, breaking the school record. She also joined freshmen Ella Schwandt, Macie Ellis, and junior Austyn Anderson to finish second in the 4x100-meter relay. Timbrook was joined on the 4x200-meter team by Schwandt, Anderson, and junior Brecca Thornhill to qualify for state with a time of 1:52.44.

Junior Carli Ellis qualified in two jumping events by finishing fourth in the long jump with a leap of 4.58 meters. Earlier in the day, Ellis cleared 1.51 meters in the high jump.

The state meet will be held Friday and Saturday at Atkins Stadium in Jefferson City.
