Harrisburg softball reaches Fayette Tournament title game, football edged by Westran

Harrisburg advanced to the championship game of the Fayette Softball Tournament with a 12-1 win over Jamestown on Saturday afternoon.

Halle Baden gave the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead with a three-RBI double in the second inning. The Bulldogs loaded the bases with one out in the inning on a Carli Ellis single and a pair of walks.

Katie Starbuck singled to score the first run of the game. Olivia Fischer and Baylie combs drew RBI walks, and Emma Fischer drove in a run with a single before Baden’s big hit.

Starbuck was 3-4 at the plate with three RBI. Kaydence Timbrook walked twice, stole a base and scored twice.

Harrisburg dropped the title game to Fayette 11-3.

Emma Fischer had an RBI hit in the first inning for Harrisburg and Combs drove in a run in the third inning to cut the Fayette lead to 4-2 and hit an RBI double in the seventh.

Emma Fischer and Starbuck each went 2-4 at the plate and Combs was 3-4.

The Bulldogs defeated Sturgeon 15-5 in the first game on Saturday. Baden hit a three-run homer in the second inning to give Harrisburg a 9-0 lead. She finished with four RBI. Emma Fischer was 2-4 with a triple and two RBI. Combs and Starbuck were each 3-4 with a walk.

On Wednesday, Harrisburg came back from a seven-run deficit to tie Westran in the sixth inning, but fell 15-12 in a high-scoring game that saw 34 total hits and just three walks.

The Bulldogs fell behind 7-1, but got back into the game on Emma Fischer’s bases-clearing triple in the third inning. Fischer scored on Hailey Emanuel’s single to cut the lead to two, but the Hornets came back with five runs in the fourth to lead 12-5.

Emma Fischer went 4-4 at the plate with three steals and four RBI. Emanuel drove in two runs for the Bulldogs.

Combs was 2-4 with two RBI. Olivia Fischer pulled the Bulldogs within a run with an RBI single in the sixth inning. Fischer stole second and third, and scored the tying run on Combs’ groundout.

Oliva Fischer had three steals and scored three runs. Starbuck was 2-3 with three steals and three runs. Bryanna Griggs was 2-3 at the plate with two steals.

Hornets beat Bulldogs with late score

Westran scored on fourth down from the 2-yard line with under two minutes to escape Harrisburg with a 24-22 win on Friday night.

The Bulldogs came back from an 18-8 deficit to lead 22-18 in the closing minutes of the game.

Wyatt Robinson found Anthony Alicea for a 37-yard touchdown on a halfback pass play in the third quarter. Tanner Fike’s 2-point run cut the Westran lead to two.

A blocked punt set the Bulldogs up for a Tanner Lanes sneak on the goal line.

Alicea and Justus Whitaker each finished with 72 receiving yards.

Robinson picked up 65 yards on 21 carries and scored the first touchdown of the game from two yards out in the first quarter.

Kevin Raines led the Bulldog defense with 12 tackles. Robinson had 11 tackles and Tanner Fike had nine.

Alicea had an interception, while Austyn Furlong and Austin Darwent each had a fumble recovery.

Harrisburg held the Hornets to 5-13 on third downs, but Westran converted all three of its fourth-down tries.

Harrisburg (2-2) will be home again this week, hosting Knox County (1-3). The Eagles beat Paris 26-18 on Friday after losing the first three games of the season.
