Named after long-time educator and coach in the Harrisburg School District, the Lowell Eaton relays were held on Friday. Eaton began coaching and teaching at Harrisburg in 1974-1975 and was the head boys basketball coach until 1978. He was also a long-time track and field coach at Harrisburg, winning several conference championships. He coached several state champion relay teams and individual champions. The annual Lowell Eaton Relays are held each spring at Harrisburg.

This year became special for the Harrisburg team, both boys and girls, as the teams swept the relays and took first place in both divisions for the first time in the 20 years the event has been held as the Eaton Relays.

“It was truly a team effort,” Harrisburg track coach Blake Logan said. “The boys had one first-place finish and the girls had two, but the boys scored in every event but hurdles, and the girls scored in all but the 1600-meter run. In both of those events, our main runners were injured.

“We really portrayed a team effort,” said Logan. “I’m really pleased with the effort our team is putting forth and how they are all buying into their role to help the team succeed.”

With 21 boys teams and 20 girls teams competing it was not an easy task to win without individuals finishing first. Even so, the Harrisburg boys scored 126 points to take first-place honors.
