The Harrisburg Lions Club will dedicate a new time chest next weekend.
The club has elected to create a chest rather than a time capsule. When the last 50-year capsule was unearthed in August 2021 water had leaked into it and destroyed virtually all of its contents.
This time, the club fashioned a chest from wood reclaimed from the old school house that was torn a few years ago. It will be sealed on Sunday, May 13, and housed either at the Lions Club building, or the school administration building.
“We decided we didn’t want to try and bury it again after last time,” said Johnny Spry, one of the event organizers.
The dedication will come after a day of events. A vendor/craft fair will take place all day, followed by a fish fry. Live music will be performed from 4 to 6 p.m.
The time chest will be open from noon until the dedication at 6 p.m. in the shelter house for people to add letters, photos, or other small items. Essays from Harrisburg students will be selected for the time chest.
A dedication ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. After that, the chest will be sealed for 50 years. It will be re-opened when the town of Harrisburg celebrates its bicentennial.
Vendors are still being sought for the event. For more information, contact Mr. Spry at (573) 999-7426.
