Howard Countians have sweltered in near record-breaking heat during recent days ' along with much of the rest of the nation. Here, the Commercial Trust Time and Temperature sign reads 106 degrees late Monday afternoon. Some relief was expected toward the end of the week.

Officially on Monday, the high hit 102 degrees and 103 degrees on Sunday. The all-time record for these dates here was 108 degrees in 1980. And if it's any consolation, nearly identical three-digit readings were being recorded locally about this same time a year ago. Triple-digit figures also were recorded on Aug. 9 and 10 of last year.
