Henderson signs with CMU track & field

When the time came for Fayette senior Josh Henderson to make his college decision, it didn’t take a lot of thought.

He’s always been comfortable at CMU.

“They checked every box,” said Henderson, who is looking to go into the pre-pharmacy program at Central Methodist in the fall of 2021.

“They had literally everything I needed, and I like the small school, too.”

Henderson broke Fayette’s school record in the discus as a sophomore and currently holds the record of 153-11. This summer, Henderson threw a personal best 158-07 in an unofficial meet held in Russellville.

Henderson has been working with the Central Methodist throwing coaches since he was in eighth grade, and he credits the Eagle coaching staff in aiding his development.

“They’ve always been there for me whenever I’ve needed it,” Henderson said.

“They’re the reason why I threw 158 feet. It wouldn’t have happened without them – other people too – but they really helped me.”

While Wednesday’s signing was not a surprise, Central Methodist’s first-year head coach Kenny Anderson said that the Eagle coaching staff was excited to get the commitment from Henderson.

“We are looking forward to his leadership qualities and the energy that he is going to bring to the team,” Anderson said.

“With Taylor Bottomley graduating, Josh will be the catalyst of our men’s throws squad moving into the future. He will be major contributor right away for us in the discus.

“He has been around us quite a bit and fits well with the group.”

Over the past four years, Henderson has worked with former CMU grad assistant Chris Aschemann, who is currently an associate head coach with the Dakota Wesleyan track & field program, and current Eagle throws coach Anitial’A Robins.

“Those coaches really brought me up to where I am today,” Henderson said. “Coach Robins came in and she really helped me. She helped Chris (Roberts) too, but she really helped me a lot.”

Henderson will be joining the 2019 Fayette graduate, Roberts, in the Eagle track program. He would like to join him as a state track & field champion as well.

Henderson said that a torn labrum will require surgery before his senior track season, but he isn’t adjusting any goals for his final season at Fayette.

“I’m going to recover from that, get better and I’m going to try to win state,” he said.

“That’s the main goal. And get the state record.”

It would be an understatement to say that throwing a class 2 record 174 feet while coming off of a shoulder injury will be challenging. But Henderson lost his junior track season to the coronavirus, and he doesn’t want to let an injury keep him from reaching his senior season goals.
