The Higbee Tigers continued their hot streak as they made the two-hour trek to Ludlow, Missouri to take on Southwest Thursday evening. Surely the 80-34 victory at least made the ride home seem shorter.
The Tigers would pull in front at the end of the first quarter by a score of 22-10. The Tigers continued to push in the second frame, taking a 20-point lead into the locker room at the half, 38-18.
Coming off the break, coach Tanner Burton’s Tigers kept on the pressure and outscored the Wildcats 26-14 in the third quarter. The fourth quarter was more of the same. Higbee outscored Southwest 16-2.
“This was probably the most fluid rotation of players we have had all season,” said Burton. “We had eight guys play in all four quarters and nobody played more than 24 minutes in the contest.”
Sophomore Derek Rockett scored 16 points while classmate Will Spilman scored 15. Another sophomore, Jordan Fuemmeler scored 14. Senior Malaki Squires put in 10 while fellow senior Luke Ritter added eight. Another senior, Jamie Smith, contributed seven.
Junior Chad Crawford and sophomore Jaxon Hudson each added five to round out the scoring for the Tigers.
“We have some solid matchups coming at us next week,” said Burton. “So we have some things we need to tighten up, so we can be focused on the task ahead of us. Our defense was solid and we had six guys with three or more steals.”
The Tigers took on Prairie Home/Bunceton on Monday night, and won 73-54 then faced Keytesville at home Tuesday night after The Advertiser went to press. Friday night, they will travel to Mendon to face Northwestern.
