Despite winning their first two games in the Northwestern tournament, the Higbee Lady Tigers could not handle the Meadville Lady Eagles in the final, falling 60-29.
“Running into a buzz saw might be an understatement,” said Higbee coach Tanner Burton.
Meadville is currently ranked eighth in Class 1. Committing 42 turnovers, was a hill too high to climb for the Lady Tigers.
For Higbee, freshman Ronnie Welch continues to impress as she scored 16, 14, and, 12 points against Bucklin-Macon County, Linn County and, Meadville, respectively. Sophomore Kylleen Gibson was the only other player for Higbee to break into double figures during the tournament with 10 against Bucklin.
The Lady Tigers were able to attack the boards during the tournament as junior Emma Johnson and Gibson pulled down eight apiece against Bucklin. Freshman Marilynn Ritter had 10 rebounds against Linn County. In the championship game three players, Johnson, Welch and sophomore Isabelle Welch, were each able to pull down seven rebounds against the higher-ranked Lady Eagles.
