Higbee girls win out out of three in Keytesville

Both Higbee and Brunswick started off ice-cold from the field, finishing the first quarter tied at 3-3 on Friday. While the Lady Wildcats eventually warmed up a bit, the Tigers remained frigid during the 42-29 loss to Brunswick in the third-place game of the Keytesville Tournament.

Higbee shot a season-low 16 percent from the field.

“We missed nine free throws and 22 layups, really hard to win ball games if we can’t capitalize on those opportunities,” Higbee coach Tanner Burton said.

Devin Clark led Higbee with ten points and four steals while Macey Whisenand had nine points. Victoria Gibson scored six points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

The Tigers have a record of 5-10. Next up for the Tigers is three straight at home including a Courtwarming and senior night matchup on Friday with Bucklin-Macon County.

Higbee 56, Keytesville 45

The Tigers bounced back from a loss to Madison on Tuesday with a 56-45 win over tournament host Keytesville to finish second in their pool.

After falling behind 14-9, Higbee outscored Keytesville 16-7 in the second quarter and 22-9 in the third.

Victoria Gibson had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. She made a pair of 3-pointers on a cold-shooting night for Higbee from outside (3-34). Devin Clark had 19 points, 13 rebounds and six steals despite having her minutes limited by four fouls.

“Devin did what Devin does, and she creates problems for the other team offensively and defensively,” Higbee coach Tanner Burton said. “We would like her to start playing 32 minutes a game again instead of getting into foul trouble.”

Macey Whisenand had 13 points and nine rebounds. Emma Johnson had a career-high six rebounds. Hailey Derboven had three steals.

“In a mess of a game, we were fortunate to prevail,” Burton said. “Keytesville fought tooth and nail for four quarters and almost upset us. I was proud of our young squad gutting out a tough win. Sometimes wins can be ugly, but as long as we are growing it will pay off in the future.”

Madison 41, Higbee 34

Higbee held Madison to three points in the first quarter, but fell victim to offensive struggles of its own over the next two quarters in a 41-34 loss in Keytesville tournament pool play on Tuesday.

The Tigers were outscored 27-11 over the middle quarters after taking a 9-3 lead.

“The girls really struggled in a tough matchup with Madison,” Higbee coach Tanner Burton said. “We just weren’t able to put enough runs together to secure a win.”

Devin Clark led the Tigers with 16 points, 11 rebounds and four steals. Higbee shot just 24 percent from the floor as a team and went 3-21 from the 3-point line.

Macey Whisenand had seven points and seven rebounds. Victoria Gibson finished with five points, six rebounds and two steals.
