Higbee rallies past New Bloomfield

A sixth-inning rally lifted the Higbee Tigers to a 7-5 at New Bloomfield on Friday.

Higbee’s record now stands at 3-4 overall, having won three out of the last five games.

The Tigers trailed 5-0 after five innings but took advantage of a growing pitch by New Bloomfield starter Jacob Willis. Higbee first baseman Hunter Dougherty led off the sixth by taking the second pitch of the at-bat to the body to reach base. He advanced to second on a single by Landon Tuggle, then to third on a wild pitch. He scored Higbee’s first run on a groundout by senior Robert Smith to open the scoring rally.

Two errors, a single, and a walk plated three more runs and loaded the bases for Dougherty to make his second plate appearance of the inning. The sophomore did not disappoint, blasting a line drive to right field for a 3-RBI triple. The three-bagger gave the Tigers a two-run lead.

New Bloomfield had a chance to regain the lead, loading the bases in the bottom of the sixth. But Higbee pitcher Blake Boggs got out of the inning with a strikeout and induced a lineout and a groundout.

Six straight outs marked the top and bottom halves of the seventh inning, concluding with a two-run Higbee victory.

Boggs picked up the win on the mound, allowing one hit with two walks and two strikeouts in 2.2 shutout innings. Starter Danny Janssen allowed five runs (4 earned) on four hits in 4.1 innings with nine walks and a strikeout.

The Tigers were set to face Bosworth on the road Tuesday after the Advertiser went to press. They host Harrisburg at 5 p.m. tonight (Wednesday) before finishing the week at Christian Fellowship on Thursday.
