Higbee’s Whisenand signs letter of intent to play at Central Christian College in Moberly

Higbee senior Macey Whisenand’s season is going a bit differently than she had planned. A starter last year, Macey’s senior year has been one in which she has been the first or second player off the bench. “It’s been a big change,” said Whisenand. “My senior year, it’s been kind of a shock for me. I’m happy my team is doing well. It’s also why I’m so excited to sign with Central Christian College of the Bible.”

Higbee coach Tanner Burton says the way Whisenand has embraced her roll off the bench speaks volumes. “She’s embraced it. A lot of kids would have given up, but it’s nice to see her fight through it. Macey’s just a great kid.”

Friday, Whisenand inked a letter of intent to play for the Saints in Moberly beginning next season. Whisenand will join her sister Alexis and expects to make an impact quickly. “I didn’t really know where I was going to go to school, but my sister goes there,” said Whisenand. “I liked it there, it was nice and had a good environment. I practiced with them one time so I thought maybe I should just go there.”

Whisenand will attend the school for two years before transferring to another school to study to become a dental hygienist.

“I think I show leadership when I’m on the court,” said Whisenand. “I can help the younger girls with their talking. I feel like they are still getting used to that stuff and that’s my leadership role, just kind of showing them what they need to do.”

“I’d just like to thank my family for always supporting me,” said Whisenand. “They’ve helped me with my decision, and coach Burton has always been a big help and my teammates have all been very supportive. He’s been my coach for six years now.”

Burton said the signing is exciting for Whisenand and the Higbee basketball program. “She’ll be the fifth player in the last nine years to go play college ball and the third girl to go over there. Even better, she got to share the high school experience with her sister, and now she’ll get to share the college experience with her sister. It’s fun to watch kids get to go on and play at the next level.”

CCB head coach Kori Zarzutzki is looking forward to having two Whisenands on her team. “I’m a little surprised by Macey’s backup role here,” said Zarzutzki. “I think she’ll play a much bigger role for us. I see a ton of potential and growth there for her. I think for us, she’ll really step into a shooter role. I’m excited for the work ethic both girls bring.”
