High school graduations postponed

Advertiser special graduation edition May 20

To call the end of high school for the 2020 senior classes “unconventional” would be an understatement. Graduating seniors were forced to bid farewell to their teachers, teammates, and even friends in the most anticlimactic of ways, by simply not returning to school after Easter break. Senior proms, fundamental teenage rights of passage, were canceled. As were athletic seasons, fine arts performances, and a multitude of other staples associated with finishing high school.

And while school districts did what they could to honor and communicate with outgoing senior classes, the end can only be perceived as unfinished and dissatisfying.

The Fayette Advertiser will honor graduating seniors from Fayette, New Franklin, Glasgow, Harrisburg, and Higbee with our annual graduation supplement. It will be published along with the Wednesday, May 20 edition. Traditionally, area businesses have included advertising support. This year it is more important than ever to show these seniors how much they mean to our communities. Any business or organization that wishes to be a part of this special edition should call the newspaper office at (660) 248-2235 during regular business hours.

Fayette High School has officially postponed its graduation ceremonies for the class of 2020 until 2 p.m. June 28. High school principal Patrick Tray held out hope until late April that the district would be able to host commencement on May 15 as originally scheduled, but the world had other plans. Graduation practice will be held at 9 a.m. on Friday, June 26.

New Franklin High School has also pushed its graduation ceremony back from its planned date of May 10 to 2 p.m. June 20. The postponement date is tentative.

Glasgow High School will keep its date of May 17, but will move the ceremony to the parking lot outside. If weather becomes a factor the district has chosen May 31 as the rain date. In the unlikely event the state lifts all social distancing regulations, graduation will be held in the gymnasium as normal.

Harrisburg has posponed its graduation from May 17 to 2 p.m. on June 29. Should restrictions remain in place, commencement could take place as late as July 27.

Higbee was scheduled to host graduation on Friday, May 22 at 7 p.m. No further plans have been announced and messages left with the district went unreturned.
