High-speed pursuit lands one man in jail

A former Fayette resident, now of Gilliam, is in custody at the Howard County Jail in Fayette after leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase on August 13. Chavez Dechawn Kent, 20, faces a charge of resisting arrest by fleeing, a Class E felony.

According to a probable cause statement by Officer Matt Johnson of the Fayette Police Department he had seen Kent’s silver Kia Amanti and later he found it empty at a residence on East Morrison St. in Fayette. Johnson wrote that he knew the driver to have active warrants. Once he saw Kent enter the vehicle and begin to drive away, Officer Johnson began to initiate a traffic stop. “I exited my patrol vehicle and made my approach, I got two steps towards it and the vehicle started to drive off,” Johnson wrote in the PC statement.

Johnson gave chase which meandered onto southbound Highway 240 where Howard County Sheriff’s Deputy Brian Sollars attempted to force Kent to stop by driving at him in the left lane of traffic. Chavez avoided Sollars’s vehicle and then turned onto Highway 124.

Both Johnson and Sollars followed Kent, who, according to the report, passed several cars on a blind hill. Johnson eventually gave up the chase shortly before reaching the Boone County line. Sollars, however, continued the pursuit and was able to apprehend Kent near where Highway 124 intersects with US 63.

Kent remains in jail on a $20,000 cash-only bond for resisting arrest. He also has a slew of warrants for failing to appear in court along with marijuana possession. He was slated to be back in Howard County court Tuesday morning for a bond hearing. Kent has yet to retain legal counsel, according to online court documents.
