To the Editor:
Happy Veterans Day to all our local veterans. We honor those who wore the uniforms of our armed services. We have our freedoms because of our veterans. Our veterans inspire us to love our country, and we all need to do our part to learn more and teach our children about the many sacrifices and the bravery that our service men and women have shown us.
Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day, which commemorated the end of the fighting in World War I. You may have heard before that it happened on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, in 1918. President Woodrow Wilson celebrated the first Armistice Day in 1919. In 1938 November 11th became a legal holiday by an act of Congress, and in 1954 it was changed from Armistice Day to Veterans Day to honor all veterans.
Besides patting a veteran on the back or telling them how much they are appreciated, please also consider donating this Veterans Day to one of the many organizations that benefit our Veterans. Wounded Warriors Project; DAV (Disabled American Veterans); the USO; Veterans Homes in Missouri or VA Hospitals; Fisher House; or your local American Legions are a few of the many organizations that could benefit from your assistance. Many organizations are lacking funding as many fundraising events have been cancelled or postponed due to the pandemic across the country.
It is with great pride and honor that we wish all our veterans a happy and safe Veterans Day. You are our original everyday heroes and we are forever grateful.
