The Howard County Ambulance District has been approved by the Bureau of Emergency Medical Services as a training entity for the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course, which it will offer starting on Monday, November 28.
Classes will meet from 6 until 10 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays until mid-March at Tricky Fish Community Center at 114 South Main Street in Fayette.
The cost for the class is $1,000, which includes books and all class materials. Payment options are available. Upon successful completion of the class, students will be eligible to test for the Missouri EMT license, which allows them to work as an EMT anywhere in the State of Missouri. A student must be 18 years old at the time of testing for a Missouri license. However, students below the age of 18 may take the class prior to turning 18 and wait to test until of age.
EMTs are trained in basic medical knowledge and skills to provide immediate medical care to patients in an emergency. They are often the first emergency service providers to arrive on the scene of a crisis, such as a vehicle accident, medical emergency, fire, or natural disaster. An EMT’s main responsibility is to provide basic and emergent medical care to stabilize patients in crisis before transporting them to a hospital where they can be further assisted by a physician. There is a local, as well as a national, shortage of EMTs with numerous job opportunities available.
