On Thursday, January 12th, the Howard County Daughters of the American Revolution and members of the SAR honored Elizabeth Daly Simpson Major, the organizing Regent for the Howard County DAR chapter. The Howard County Chapter was organized on January 12th, 1914, at the home of Mrs. Major.
At the grave of Mrs. Major in the Fayette City Cemetery, the SAR color guard presented and retired the colors and performed a musket salute. Howard County’s past chapter Regent, Barbara Alexander, led the tribute to Mrs. Major and the DAR members laid a wreath at her grave.
Mrs. Major was asked to be the Organizing Regent since she had previously been a member of the Jane Randolph Jefferson DAR Chapter in Jefferson City. Her husband, Samuel Collier Major III, as a State Senator, aided the society in obtaining the money for the Santa Fe Trail marker in downtown New Franklin. Because of Mrs. Major’s experience, ability, and willingness to serve, she was re-elected after her first term as Chapter Regent.
Attending the ceremony honoring Mrs. Major and the anniversary of the Howard County DAR were Barbara Alexander, current treasurer, and past Regent; Barbara Comegys, chaplain; Gwen Wilder, registrar; Kitty Overstreet; and new member Patty Beringer.
